
Do not make major life decisions when you are on the valley floor or the mountain-top. But find yourself a QUIET haven in both. In every depressing wilderness there is a peaceful and joyful 'cave of Adullam' and on every glorious mountaintop there is a 'cleft of the rock' in which you can rest and reason.
Like in nature, the beauty of 'real life' is in its undulating topography - its highs and lows. God has ordained it that way and designed us to thrive in it: it will take a technology of angelic proportions to calibrate the spectrum of emotions the human heart can endure.
So are you currently in the valley - broke, broken-hearted, sick, sad, stranded, penitent or bereaved? It's OK to have a pity-PARTY for a season (Matt. 5:4), but save yourself some left-overs for the hike to the next mountain-top.
Or are you on the mountain-top? It's also OK to have a ball (James 5:13) But make sure your guest list includes friends who have proven true and are most likely to show-up and stay late at your next pity party.
Truth is: stability and success do not ultimately come from having our mountains leveled or valleys reclaimed. They come from LEARNING to train our inner man to latch on tightly to the HOLY SPIRIT within us - regardless of the terrain.
"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have LEARNED the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:12-13, NIV)
