And the Prince of the Lord's host said to Joshua, Loose your shoes from off your feet, for the PLACE where you STAND is HOLY. And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:15, AMP)
Barefooted worship! This is what Joshua experienced. Like Moses his predecessor and Jacob before him, he had stumbled unknowingly into God's Holy Presence (GHP). Unprepared and indecent, he was commanded to fulfill the outward protocol of worship. Biblical holiness is a misunderstood theme. People associate holiness with sinlessness. When we mention holiness, the natural mind begins to think of sin and how to avoid or overcome it. We start to enumerate, itemize and seek to eradicate the sins in our lives. True, holiness includes sinlessness. But that is not what it is in the main. How do I know? God was Holy way before Satan invented sin. Holiness existed before sin ever began as an idea in Satan's mind. God did not invent holiness in order to combat sin. Holiness, in it's original essence, is a place, presence and person.
To be holy is to be a earthly home where the person and presence of God can dwell and find unhindered expression
To be holy is to live ABSOLUTELY for the Lord. It is to have a single occupant named the Triune God in your physical and psychological person.
Holiness is to allow God to furnish your inner and outward man to his taste. It is to give over your will and every aspect of your life to the Lord for his use.
Holiness is to cooperate completely with divine activity in your life. Holiness is something God does in you that you initially resist until he lovingly overwhelms you into submission. Holiness is not a pursuit but a surrender. Holiness is to give God all he wants, when he wants it and how he wants it - and never share his place in your life with anything or anyone else. Holiness is going barefooted in God's presence, letting your naked sole brush against God's rock of purity. It is the climax of praise. It is a lifestyle of unceasing and consistent worship.
